Streamyx, Streamyx...things u have to know...
Arghh, i having a problem with my phone line, means that i can't use my Streamyx, but what i want to write is about Streamyx, things that u have to know....
,
The reason I’m writing this is mainly because I believed we are not using the latest available technology in terms of providing fast internet connectivity. I'm also ex-TMNET Employee (network enginer), and one of my job area was Streamyx, although just a 'touch' about it (plus my research interest as Academician is Computer Networking/Telecommunication).
While our government is talking about increasing broadband penetration nationwide (which is excellent), not much are being done to cater the need existing broadband customer. Majority of broadband users in Malaysia are Streamyx subscriber and only a certain percentage uses other broadband provider. Streamyx uses ADSL technology specifically ADSL G.Lite (up to 1.5Mbit/s) and ADSL G.DMT (up to 8Mbit/s) and currently offers strictly out-of-date package for its customers;
But first let us look at what ADLS is all about. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a form of DSL, a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide. It does this by utilizing frequencies that are not used by a voice telephone call. A splitter or micro filters allow a single telephone connection to be used for both ADSL service and voice calls at the same time. Because phone lines vary in quality and were not originally engineered with ADSL in mind, it can generally only be used over short distances, typically less than 3mi (5 km).
The ADSL technology that being implemented by Telekom Malaysia is already outdated. Major ISP worldwide is using ADSL2/ADSL2+ now. ADSL2 offer speed up to 12Mbit/s and ADSL2+ offers an even faster speed, up to 24Mbit/s. It is quite embarrassing isn’t it? We boast about the excellent infrastructure MSC can offer for foreign investor but we often forget our own people. We are seriously lacking of good broadband infrastructure. Want to know something…? Iran and Lebanon have ADSL2+ for their broadband connection. How come a war torn country have better Internet connectivity that Malaysia?
I’m urging the governing authority (MCMC) to put pressure to TM to upgrade their streamyx technology and unbundle the local loop. This is no longer an era when one incumbent company monopolise everything. It’s about time they acknowledge the customer’s need. Being a GLC they suppose carry the country aspiration and shoulder the responsibility to provide the best broadband experience in Malaysia.
It is unfair for me to say TM hasn’t made any move at all. Recently they have introduced metro-e. It’s not related to streamyx but will definitely provider better broadband experience (we are talking about up 1Gbit/s). Unfortunately, the current implementation is limited to business and corporate user. Metro-e for residential is underway but I don’t think we are going to see it anytime sooner.
Before I end my discussion, I’d like to offer a few suggestions:
1. TM must upgrade to ADSL2+. You are slowing us down. We need for more speed. Please acknowledge and understand this issue.
2. Better pricing package (assuming ADSL2+ in place and ADSL in not capped). This new package will require those download junkies (including myself) to pay more the excess data.
3. Hasten the metro-e residential deployment
4. Where is Wimax? (WTF, i don't think we have expertise on this area)
5. No more bandwidth capping.
6. Unbundle the local loop. Allow fresh competition, so there will be a better service.
Yeah, while some complaining about slow download connection (mostly BT download), they should know what BT is all about. It depends on tracker, seeder, location, computer of file's owner and whether your BT has been 'capped' or not (means that TMNET has already limiting your download bandwidth on BT/P2P). I can't assure you whether TM already capping our BT/P2P download for trackers outside from Malaysia, but if you know the tricks, it should not be a problem at all.
And another thing, you can't really blame tmnet also because our malaysian mentality is the same, got unlimited access means that you must have to download 24/7.....you guys should know that BT is bandwith killer, and if u are in Bandwidth business, Bandwidth is damn expensive.
Ah… last but not least… always remember being a GLC actually means the company belong to the people.
PS: C'mon la TM, upgrade la copper tu wei, dari zaman british lagi....re-engineer semua, tukar ke fiber optic
